Hosted by the Liu Institute Network for Africa (LINA)\, thi s event seeks to gather African postgraduate students studying at UBC\, and in Canada at large\, to engage in conversations regarding career launchin g\, and shaping their career trajectory in Canada with their postgraduate s tudies as a starting point. This event will present African postgraduate st udents with an opportunity to hear from experienced professionals who have established successful careers in Canada. Networking with the speakers will take place after the event.
Professor Samson Madera Nashon is Department Head and Professor of Science Education UBC Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy. His most rece nt studies include High school science in BC: The status of Physics 12< /em>\; The Nature of analogies that Kenyan high school teachers use in explaining physics concepts\; Accessing science and mathematics co urse offerings: A case of rural BC high schools\; and the ongoing Metacognition and reflective inquiry (MRI): Understanding learning across c ontexts. Dr. Nashon is additionally involved in research projects that include investigations into African students’ ways of knowing within scien tific discourses. His work is featured in numerous journals including Scien ce Education\, the Journal of Physics Teacher Education Online\, and Resear ch In Science Education\, among others.
Dr. Mosope Fagbongbe
Dr. Mosope Fagbongbe\, LL.B\, LL.M\, Ph.D.\, is an As sociate Counsel at Bekkering York Barristers LLP. She earned he r Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Master of Laws (LL.M) in Lagos\, Nigeria bef ore obtaining a second Master of Law from the University of Manitoba and a Doctoral degree from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Fagbongbe was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1997\, where she started her legal career as junior legal counsel with a corporate law firm in Lagos. Thereafter\, she m oved to a national research institution in Nigeria where she engaged in leg al research and teaching\, specializing in constitutional\, criminal\, and human rights law. She served as a Sessional Lecturer at the Faculty of Law\ , University of British Columbia before completing the Certificate of Quali fication from the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. Dr. Fagbongbe comp leted her articling year at a national law firm and the law department of a major oil and gas company in Calgary\, Alberta. She was called to the Albe rta Bar in July 2016 and joined the Law Society of British Columbia in 2017 \; her current practice is focused on insurance defence\, immigration\, emp loyment\, and human rights law.
Christian Sopuruchi< /strong>
Christian Sopuruchi chairs the Liu Institute Network for Africa (LINA) with Jessica Mukiri. He is a Ph .D. student at the Allard School of Law University of British Columbia\, a university teacher\, and a Radio host at African Vibes CFRO 100 .5 Vancouver Coop Radio. Sopuruchi’s time in Vancouver is dedicated to crea ting a resilient thriving community for BC's black residents through buildi ng networks and sustainable scholarship. Back home\, Sopuruchi leads the Pr ecious Fountain Foundation\, an initiative dedicated to changing the lives of African youth through educational interventions.
