Pearl Islam

Lead Education Designer on TLEF Project: Enhancing Socio-Technical Skills in Engineering Education through Cross-Cultural Experiential Learning

About

Pearl Islam (she/her) is a third-year Chemical Engineering student at the University of British Columbia, where she bridges her passion for scientific theory and real-world application with a commitment to equitable education. Her academic focus spans process engineering and sustainable design, but her true drive lies in demystifying STEM for underserved communities.

A dedicated educator, Pearl began her journey teaching science to children at a Dhaka-based NGO, fostering curiosity in young learners. Now, as the Lead Education Designer for a TLEF-funded project, she develops and delivers engineering lessons for girls in rural Nepal, empowering them to pursue STEM fields. This work, which she describes as “the perfect intersection of my technical skills and my purpose,” fuels her belief that mentorship can reshape systemic barriers.

Beyond the lab and classroom, Pearl is an avid swimmer seizing every opportunity to dive into pools, lakes, or oceans—and a weekend hiker, drawn to trails that combine physical challenge with quiet reflection.
