Position Summary:

In collaboration with an organization offering summer programs to highschool students across North America, ORICE will be developing and delivering a two-week non-credit course on social justice and human rights.

The program assistant for this position will play a critical role in the development and implementation of the course during summer 2021.  This non-credit course offering is building off of a successful pilot program that ORICE ran in fall 2020.

The program assistant will build upon existing course material and activities to strengthen the learning of the course participants. The social justice and human rights course aims to allow participants to explore their own position and identity in society and reflect on how systems influence and reinforce their individual and collective identities and vice versa. The course will also explore opportunities to disrupt and change the status quo working towards addressing systemic injustice.  The successful program assistant will work with ORICE staff to craft the course structure and material as well as guiding student learning through course facilitation.

Specific duties may include:

  1. Updating and refining the existing course syllabus, developing lesson plans, researching content for each class, preparing multimedia resources including slide deck and videos. Review existing program learning resources and identify areas requiring development or revision
  2. Co-facilitation of activities/leading discussions throughout the sessions.
  3. Identifying and organizing guest speakers and community organizations pertinent to the class
  4. Manage communications with all ORICE staff and program stakeholders.
  5. Create mechanisms for, and manage, course feedback throughout the program.
  6. Maintaining clear and consistent communication with youth participants throughout the course.
  7. Design and implement pre-post evaluations to assess the intended outcomes of the course.
  8. Analyze evaluations and develop recommendations for course improvement for future iterations.
  9. Other duties as appropriate

Qualifications:

Knowledge & Skills:
  • Project management experience
  • Experience in conducting literature reviews and summarizing findings.
  • Experience developing curriculum or teaching/learning materials.
  • Experience with social justice, and human rights activism and/or education and/or lived
  • Prior experience and/or interest in workshop facilitation
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, demonstrate a strong work ethic and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion and confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Education Level:
Currently undertaking a Graduate degree at UBC or has significant experience with education, pedagogy, social justice education and is studying at the senior undergraduate level.

Position Fit:

  • Dedication to fulfilling administrative tasks such as course coordination, information dissemination and curriculum design in addition to facilitation aspects.
  • Understanding of the pedagogical value, theoretical and practical issues involved in
  • Community Service Learning placements and experience working with community-based organizations, would be considered strong assets.
  • Desire to work both independently and as part of a team.
